Nanomaterials and the Environment - June 13-14, 2013, Moscow

The symposium will be organized by Institute of Organic Chemistry, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow State University and International Science and Technology Center (ISTC). The Registration and the Symposium will take place at the Chemistry Department of Moscow State University on June 13-14, 2013. We cordially invite you to participate in the Symposium with a Keynote, Oral or Poster (Ph.D. students) presentation.

About the symposium:
The production, use and disposal of nanomaterials will lead to their release to the environment. Wastewater treatment streams and landfill leachate containing nanomaterials are means through which their modified forms will end up in the environment. In addition, some nanomaterials can be used in environmental remediation applications, therefore directly ending up in soils, sediments and water bodies. The toxicity metrics of available and emerging nanomaterials is of utmost importance.

The overall behavior of nanoparticles in the environment most likely depends not only on the physical and chemical character of the nanomaterial, but also on the characteristics of the receiving environment. It is generally accepted that small particles tend to aggregate or agglomerate to eventually become associated with other dissolved, colloidal and particulate matter present in the environment. Upon entry into the environment, nanoparticles may remain intact or undergo one or more of the following: dissolution; speciation (i.e. association with other ionic or molecular dissolved chemical substances); biological or chemical transformation to other chemicals, and/or complete mineralization (to carbon dioxide and water); agglomeration/disagglomeration and settling.

In order to accurately assess the effects of nanomaterials in the environment, exposure concentrations should be considered. All the forms, in which the nanomaterial occurs, which means all physical and chemical species, have to be addressed and evaluated. It is important to realize that there may be some ‘hot spots’ where nanomaterials might concentrate due to their tendency to aggregate/agglomerate and potentially to adsorb to or associate with organic matter. Furthermore, it is likely that some of the nanomaterials going through the waste treatment stream will end up associated with the solid phase that could potentially be deposited in certain environmental compartments where they might reach higher loads.

Therefore, accurate assessment of environmental concentrations of nanomaterials requires detailed insight into the processes that act on these materials in the environment. Unfortunately, currently available knowledge of these processes is insufficient to allow quantitative predictions of the environmental fate of nanomaterials.

nanotoxicity and principles of design of less harmful nanoparticles,
including modeling studies for both aspects
fate and transport of nanomaterials in the environment

Kazan Summer School on Chemoinformatics

The Alexander Butlerov Institute of Chemistry is delighted to invite you to take part in the first Summer School on chemoinformatics, which will take place in Kazan, Russia, from 26th to 29th August 2013.

Chemoinformatics is a new and highly demanded multidisciplinary domain of modern chemistry in the intersection of chemistry, biology, mathematics and informatics. The main objectives of this domain are stocking and management of chemical information and its use to create compounds, reactions and materials possessing desired features. Chemoinformatics is widely used to create new drugs for medicinal and veterinary purposes, as well as innovative materials, catalysts, reagents for chemical industry. Despite the large potential demand for specialists in Chemoinformatics, educational programs of this discipline in Russia are not yet quite developed. Only in recent years corresponding programs have been opened in Moscow State University (MSU) and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), and in 2012 in Kazan Federal University (KFU) the Master program of Chemoinformaitcs has been opened, which is now the third active educational program of Chemoinformatics in the world. Summer School on Chemoinformatics, planned as regular event, aims to create the conditions for training specialists of Chemoinformatics in Russia, as well as to create educational and scientific environment for scientists, pharmaceutical and chemical industry representatives, IT specialists and software developers.

The second CADASTER workshop will be organized in Helmholtz-Zentrum München, Neuherberg, Germany and will take place from October 7^th to 9^th 2012. It will provide a tutorial to all interested partners, including industry and SMEs, on how to develop new models for the assessment of REACH-end points (in particular for new scaffolds of compounds for which there are no reliable QSAR models) and how to use the software developed by the project participants.

CADASTER Workshop on the use of QSAR models in REACH

First Cadaster workshop was organized in Maribor, Slovenia, as a part of CMPTI conference (http://cmtpi-2011.si) and took place from September 1st to 2nd 2011. Workshop aims were to assist the risk assessors and national chemicals authorities, particular in Eastern European countries, with the use of the QSAR tools for the risks assessments in REACH.

Open positions at ECO project

The new European funded FP7 project Environmental ChemOinformatics – ECO provides eleven positions leading towards PhD, Long-Term Fellowships, (Early Stage Researchers in EU terminology) and one postdoctoral appointment (Experienced Researcher in EU terminology) starting March 2010. Moreover 37 Short-Term Fellowships (Early Stage Researchers in EU terminology) will be appointed during 2010-2013.

The objective of the training programme is to provide a comprehensive training in toxicological risk assessment that serves as a model for future European training in risk assessment for accredited European risk assessors.

The training programme is intended for individuals who have previous training or experience in toxicology and who would like to pursue a career in risk assessment in Europe in industry, regulatory authorities, consultancy or academia.

The training programme includes eight 1-week-long course modules and an 450 hour-long applied training at an institution performing risk assessments.

The training programme is organised by TRISK, a project that is funded by the European Union, in the framework of the Second Programme of Community Action in the field of Health (2008-2013).

Five European universities and one research consortium are partners in the TRISK project: University of Milan, Italy, University of Surrey, UK, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, University of Düsseldorf, Germany, University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, Technoalimenti SCpA, Italy.

In coorporation with ICANN'09: International Conference on Artificial Neural Networks, European Neural Network Society (ENNS) we established a challenge on www.CADASTER.eu
